A total of 67 jobs are to go at ABB manufacturing facilities in Dundalk and Dublin by the middle of next year

Today the company announced that 60 jobs are to go from the ABB factory in Dundalk, which makes products that support the pulp and paper industry.

The job losses come as a result of the transfer of the firm's quality control systems to Shanghai in China.

Some functions will remain in the Dundalk factory such as sales and marketing as well as engineering and support activities. 41 staff in these areas will keep their jobs.

The company said the move was as a result of the world economic downturn and the need to increase competitiveness.

Another seven jobs are to go at the ABB facility in Dublin. The company blamed the downturn in the construction and manufacturing industries for these cuts.

The company has five operations around Ireland, employing 400 people.

A spokesperson for ABB said they would do their best to support their employees and said the group was still committed to working in Ireland.

Meanwhile, 18 jobs are to go at a builders providers in Waterford. Management at Morris said the redundancies would help the firm focus on the long term viability of the business.
