A US security software company is to create 120 jobs at its Cork operations. McAfee's products offer security to people to browsing the internet and shopping online. The new positions are in sales.
Meanwhile, a Carlow mushroom company says it will add 60 new jobs.
IDA-backed McAfee is the world's largest security technology company and the Cork operations run its markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The company has been in Cork since 2004 and has an existing workforce of 180. Today's announcement will double McAfee's sales team on this side of the Atlantic.
The company is one of the world's top brands tackling computer viruses and other mischievous software and hackers.
The parent group has sales of more than $1.6 billion a year and McAfee has grown in line with the development of internet commerce.
The announcement follows the publication of figures from the Central Statistics Office yesterday which showed that the number of people unemployed has more than doubled in the last year, with the pace of job losses this year accelerating.
Aldi demand prompts Codd expansion
Codd Mushrooms says it will add 60 new jobs at its production facility in Tullow, Co Carlow.
The company says the jobs will be in management, quality, harvesting and packing. As part of the expansion, Codd Mushrooms will also be doubling the size of its production facility from 7,000 to 14,000 square metres at a total cost of €2.5m.
Managing director and founder of Codd Mushrooms Leslie Codd said that, despite the recession, there had been a 'substantial increase' in demand for its mushrooms, especially from its biggest customer, grocery chain Aldi.
Established in Tullow in 1990, and owned jointly by Mr Codd and his brother Raymond, Codd Mushrooms currently employs 73 staff.
