The Financial Services Ombudsman, Joe Meade, plans to retire from the post on January 2 next year.

That date is Mr Meade's 60th birthday. He is the country's first Financial Services Ombudsman, having taken up the position when the office was set up in 2005.

Since the office began work, it has received more than 23,000 complaints. More than €55m has been refunded to consumers as a result of the Ombudsman's work.
