Ireland signs tax deal with Bermuda

Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has signed a tax information exchange agreement with Bermuda.
The agreement will allow Revenue to request information relevant to an Irish tax investigation directly from the authorities in Bermuda.

The Department of Finance says this would usually cover bank account information and beneficial ownership information for companies and other entities set up in Bermuda.

'I welcome the commitment of Bermuda to implement the OECD standards of transparency and exchange of information in tax matters and their willingness to enter into tax information exchange agreements,' Minister Lenihan said.

In recent years the OECD has set standards on the exchange of tax information in an effort to encourage more transparency.

Today's is the eighth such agreement that Ireland has signed, following the signing of agreements with the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Anguilla, and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Ireland has also signed Double Taxation Agreements (DTAs) with 51 countries and hopes to move this number up to 60 by the end of the year.
