Snack food producer Largo Foods has announced it is to close part of its plant in Gweedore, Co Donegal, with the loss of 123 jobs.

Largo will move some of its production activity in Gweedore to its facility in Ashbourne, Co Meath. It hopes to have this process completed by the end of August.

The company makes the country's top brand crisps, including Tayto, King and Hunky Dorys.

In a statement, the company said it took the decision 'in order to cut costs, improve its competitiveness and sustain its business into the future.'

The owner and founder of the company Raymond Coyle also claimed that the weakness of sterling had added to its problems.

The firm currently has a full-time workforce of 601, of which 250 are based in Donegal. It will offer some positions in Ashbourne to staff from Gweedore, and said it will help and advise those who will be left without jobs.
