The Financial Regulator says consumers can make substantial savings by shopping around for home insurance.
It has published a new cost comparison survey, which shows that savings of up to €400 can be made by comparing prices, before buying a policy.
This survey gathers quotes from nine different insurance companies, for a range of dwellings, in various parts of the country.
The research shows cover for a three bedroom house in Co Dublin - with contents and specified items included - can be as much as €759 or as low as €358, depending on the insurer.
In all case studies, the cheapest insurance provider was an online broker but the Regulator says quotations will vary for individual policies, depending on the level of cover required.
It also points out that consumers could be paying more than they have to, by over-insuring homes. The Regulator advises homeowners to check what the actual rebuilding or reinstatement cost is for their property.
The survey is available in full on the itsyourmoney.ie website.
