British finance minister Alistair Darling said today that the Group of 20 industrial and developing nations must act together to combat the global financial crisis.
Darling, who will host a meeting of G20 finance chiefs near London this weekend, added there was no 'overnight solution' to the crisis that has dragged Britain, the euro zone, Japan and the US into recession.
'We must work together not as a small group of advanced economies, but globally - including the emerging and developing economies,' Darling told a press conference ahead of the gathering.
'No problem should ever be too great for us to deal with,' he said, adding that there would be 'no instant remedy or overnight solution' to the crisis.
G20 finance ministers and central bankers will meet on Saturday ahead of an April 2 summit in London. Britain is chair of the G20 this year.
'We will make progress this weekend and we will make progress in the beginning of April,' Darling said.
'I haven't the slightest doubt against a background that is moving all the time that more action will be taken,' he stated.
'There are a few occasions that will occur every century where it is necessary for countries to come together to sometimes do things that they would not do in ordinary times. It is absolutely essential that we are ready to take action because these are extraordinarily difficult times,' he added.
