Almost 10,000 Toyota Yaris cars are being recalled in Ireland because of a minor defect with seatbelts.

The vehicles affected were manufactured between June 2005 and April 2007.

Just under 1.3 million cars worldwide are being recalled because of this problem with the seatbelt mechanism.

The company says there is no fault with the seatbelt itself but that the defect lies with a sound insulator which could become damaged by high temperatures generated in the event of a crash.

Toyota says there have been two cases worldwide where it caught fire.

9,841 Yaris cars in Ireland are affected by this recall.

Toyota Ireland says it will replace the part at no cost to the owner and that it should take no longer than 40 minutes.

The company says owners of the vehicles involved will recieve notification by post early next month.
