5.15pm Markets Update

Shares in Anglo Irish Bank fell to a new low in Dublin this evening, as the Government's plan to take a 75% stake in the bank continued to affect the shares. Anglo Irish closed at 18 cent, down 12 cent (39%) on the day.

Overall, the ISEQ fell 26 points to end at 2,348, though AIB added 10 cent to €1.77. Food stocks were weaker, with Kerry losing 89 cent to €13.40 and Aryzta down 41 to €23.04.

Other European markets had mixed fortunes, with the London FTSE gaining seven points to close at 4,256. But in Paris the CAC fell 0.7% to 3,128 while the Frankfurt Dax lost 0.2% to end the day at 4,629.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones was down 51 points at 8,469 after more weak economic figures, while the Nasdaq was eight points lower at 1,525. In Tokyo, the Nikkei was closed for a holiday.
