US Senate - Tax breaks sweeten bill

US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said this evening she was 'optimistic' the House will now pass a financial rescue package which it rejected earlier in the week.

A vote on an amended bill, passed by the Senate last night, is expected in the House tomorrow.

The US Senate overwhelmingly voted in favour of a revised bail-out bill for Wall Street. A bi-partisan agreement added an extra $110 billion of tax breaks to the bill in an attempt to win over more votes in the House.

The strong endorsement by the Senate -74 votes for and 25 votes against - is a major boost and relief for supporters of the bank bail-out bill.

Sweetened by $110 billion of tax breaks and a substantial increase in federal bank deposit insurance, lawmakers in the Senate hope this bill will persuade moderate members of the House of Representatives to change their vote.
