An Oireachtas committee has heard that Revenue is looking at 90 cases of serious tax evasion involving VAT fraud on trade with other EU member states.
Revenue official Niall Cody was speaking to the Oireachtas Committee on European Scrutiny.
He said the tax authority's experience showed that business people who were involved in VAT fraud were also likely to be involved in fraud on excise duties, income taxes and corporation taxes.
He said there were also 20 investigations of significant tax fraud linked to north-south trade currently taking place.
