Satellite communications company Solaris Mobile has confirmed that it is setting up its corporate headquarters in Dublin, with the creation of 50 jobs over the next three years. The jobs are being supported by IDA Ireland.
The establishment of Solaris Mobile was announced in 2006 by SES Astra and the Eutelsat Communications companies as a joint venture operation for the provision of a new satellite-based service in Europe. A satellite for the new service has been under construction since 2006 and is scheduled for launch early next year.
The new satellite will enable the broadcasting of TV, video and radio, as well as providing a platform for new two-way communication services to handheld mobile devices. It will also allow satellite infrastructure to compete with existing terrestrial networks for the provision of broadcasting services to the mobile sector.
The Dublin jobs will require a third level qualification with knowledge of space, telecoms, regulatory or mobile industries.
'This project is the first investment in Ireland by international satellite operators and as such is a unique investment for the country, particularly as it is being made by two of the highest profile brand-name companies in the global satellite communications industry,' commented Tanaiste and Enterprise Minister Mary Coughlan.
