Euro zone swings into trade surplus in April

The euro zone saw its trade balance with the rest of the world swing into a surplus in April, new official EU data shows.

The euro zone recorded a trade surplus of €2.3 billion in April after a March deficit of €1.5 billion, the European Union's Eurostat data agency said. The deficit compared with a surplus of €2 billion euros in April 2007, the data showed.

Imports rose 16% in April over one year to €138.2 billion, while exports also rose 16% to €135.9 billion, Eurostat said.

Meanwhile, the 27-nation EU showed a trade deficit of €15.4 billion in April, down from a deficit of €20.8 billion in March but up from a shortfall of €12.9 billion in April 2007.
