Brown opposes EU common tax plan

British prime minister Gordon Brown has emphasised his opposition to any move towards EU tax harmonisation, according to Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore.

The issue was raised during talks at Downing Street today aimed at improving relations between the Irish and British Labour parties.

Afterwards Mr Gilmore told RTE News that Gordon Brown shared the Irish Labour Party's opposition to a common corporate tax base across Europe even though no such proposal is contained in the Lisbon Treaty.

The two party leaders also discussed the forthcoming investment conference in Belfast next month and expressed their hopes for its success.
