The chairman of the Cork Airport Authority is to resign. Joe Gantly told a meeting of the airport's board this morning that he has informed Transport Minister Noel Dempsey that he will be standing down from his position as chairman at the end of July 2008.
Mr Gantly said when he took the job in 2003, his aim was to expand the number of routes out of Cork , to open the new terminal, to increase passenger numbers and to oversee the breakup from the Dublin Airport Authority.
He said that having achieved these objectives, he felt it was now timely for him to stand down.
Last Monday, the board voted by just one vote to controversially accept responsibility for a debt of €113m in order to secure independence from Dublin Airport. The move came despite a promise from former Transport Minister Seamus Brennan that the airport would be debt free.
