Dublin Port has said trade levels at the port last year topped 30 million tonnes for the first time.

The total volume of goods passing through was 30.9 million tonnes, an increase of 5.7% on 2006. Imports were up 4.5% to 19.9 million while exports grew by 8% to 10.9 million. The number of cars brought in rose by 10.7% to 141,346.

The highest level of growth was in the RoRo (roll-on roll-off) sector. Dublin Port Company CEO Enda Connellan said the main reason for growth was demand for consumer goods. He said he expected this to continue because of the extra retail space planned for Dublin in the coming years.

The company also said ferry passengers in 2007 were up 11.5% from 2006 to 1.3 million.
