French trader Jerome Kerviel, whose is alleged to have cost Societe Generale billions of euros in unauthorised deals, has been taken into custody after a court hearing in Paris.

The appeals court upheld a plea from the state prosecutor's office that Mr Kerviel should be placed in detention, 11 days after he was released after questioning.

The hearing took place just hours after police began questioning a second suspect in the case.

A share broker with the Societe Generale subsidiary Fimat was taken in for questioning yesterday over allegations that he knew of Mr Kerviel's alleged activities.
