Official figures show that the number of trips made by Irish people abroad jumped by almost 12% in August compared with the same month last year.
Irish people made 815,600 trips overseas in the month, according to the Central Statistics Office. The number of trips into Ireland was up 3.6% to 962,700.
A breakdown showed that visits from the UK rose by 2%, while the rest of Europe grew by 9.4%, but trips from North America fell 3% compared with the same month last year. British residents account for almost half of all overseas visits to Ireland.
For the first eight months of the year, trips abroad by Irish residents are up 12.2% at just under 5.25 million, while visits to Ireland are up 4% at almost 5.5 million. North American visits are up 2.1%, but British visits are down 1%.
