Official figures show that the number of new cars licensed in June was 15,472, an increase of 2.9% on the same month last year.
The Central Statistics Office said the number of new cars for the first six months was up 6.6% on the same period last year at 138,973. The total number of all new vehicles licensed in June was 4% higher at 21,457.
A breakdown of the new car figures for June showed that Toyota led the way with 2,355, followed by Volkswagen and Ford.
