Young drivers' premiums could fall

Insurance costs for young drivers look set to fall next year if the reduction in the number of road deaths continues. The Insurance Brokers Association says that if the trend is maintained for the rest of the year, companies will have to respond by lowering the price of premiums.

Recent figures show 34 drivers aged between 16 and 35 lost their lives in the first six months of this year compared with 58 during the same period in 2006.

There has also been a reduction in the number of young passengers dying on Irish roads. Road Safety Authority statistics show a dip from 36 in the first half of 2006 to 26 to the end June this year.

The head of the brokers' group, Diarmuid Kelly, says the data suggest that attitudes among young motorists are changing. He says any reductions in the price of insurance should benefit this category of drivers.
