The number of people out of work in Germany fell to the lowest level in five and a half years in May thanks to the current boom in Europe's biggest economy, official data showed today.
The German jobless rate fell by a 0.4 percentage points to 9.1% in May, the Federal Labour Agency in Nuremberg calculated. This was the lowest level since October 2001.
And the overall jobless total declined by 161,000 to 3.806 million, the lowest number of dole-claimers in Germany since November 2001, the figures showed.
'The economic upturn in Germany is continuing apace and helping to stimulate the labour market,' said labour office chief Frank Weise.
