The Tánaiste and leader of the Progressive Democrats Michael McDowell has pledged to reform stamp duty immediately after the general election if his party is returned to government.
Speaking at the launch of the PDs' economic document, Mr McDowell said his party would bring down stamp duty before the Dail's summer recess without any phasing-in period.
The PDs are proposing to abolish the measure for first-time buyers and change the regime for others, so that higher rates are paid only on the portion of each price over the rate threshold.
The PDs are also proposing to reduce both rates of income tax in the lifetime of the next government and to eliminate the national debt by 2013.
