WH Smith to open instore post offices

Retailer WH Smith today unveiled plans to open post offices within 70 of its high street stores in Britain.

The agreement with the Post Office follows a successful trial run involving franchises at six WH Smith sites.

However, the Communication Workers Union attacked the post office announcement, warning that more than 1,000 experienced staff faced losing their jobs.

WH Smith also said its trading recovery was on track after profits rose 7% to £59m in the six months to the end of February.

Chief executive Kate Swann said the company had rebuilt its authority in core categories, despite competitive trading over the Christmas period.
