5.45pm Markets Update

US shares moved higher this evening as the market kept some momentum from a big rally in the previous session and generally positive economic and company news. The Dow Jones gained 60 points to 12,781 though the Nasdaq was unchanged at 2,519.

European shares were mixed, with London's FTSE falling as investors worried about the likelihood of further interest rate rises after UK inflation rose to its highest in ten years, with banks and property companies bearing the brunt.

Paris ended down slightly at 7,348, while Frankfurt edged up to 7,348. The FTSE ended down 18 points at 6,498.

In Dublin, the ISEQ closed down four at 9,700, with CRH losing 39 cent to €32.40, though food group Kerry gained 30 to €22.75.

Earlier today, the Nikkei index of Japanese shares closed down 100 points at 17,527.
