A Dublin based distrubutor of chilled and frozen foods is to close at the end of the month with the loss of 350 jobs.
Whelan Frozen Foods has been storing and distributing food for Dunnes Stores for 26 years. The firm's only client was Dunnes but the supermarket group has moved the contract to other suppliers.
According to press reports this morning, DCC subsidiary Allied Foods is understood to have been awarded a major distribution contract with Dunnes Stores to deliver the supermarket chain's frozen produce and some of its chilled produce.
Press reports also indicate that Sam Dennigan, a Dublin-based logistics firm, is believed to have won the contract from Dunnes to distribute the remainder of its chilled produce.
Meanwhile, in other jobs news this morning, 300 jobs are to be created by international software company VMware in Cork. Full details of the new jobs will be announced later this month.
