BT rings up one million VoIP customers

Telecoms giant BT said it now has one million customers in the UK making calls over the internet.

The group reached the landmark in double quick time after it said in July 2006 that it hoped to get one million customers using its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service within a year.

BT's unexpected surge in VoIP customers is thought to have benefited from the troubles experienced by rival Carphone Warehouse with its TalkTalk offering, which struggled to cope with a surge of demand on launch.

Competition in the VoIP market in the UK is increasing rapidly, with all major telecoms firms eyeing the market as an alternative to the saturated mobile phone sector.
