ComReg happy with VoIP services

The communications regulator today published its outcome of its review of the current Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone services.

ComReg said it undertook the review to see whether any further measures were required to encourage growth of VoIP, as the regulator believe the services enhance competition and provides greater choice for consumers.

ComReg Isolde Goggin said 'we have taken a light-handed approach to regulating VoIP, to minimise the possible barriers to entry and to provide as flexible an environment as possible'.

She said that ComReg has already opened up access to telephone numbers for Service Providers of VoIP.

Overall ComReg said it was very satisfied with the progress of VoIP to date and with the steps taken so far. ComReg said it will continue to monitor various concerns or risks that have been mentioned in the review.

In other news today ComReg said it will launch a new website next month that will allow consumers compare the costs of homephone and broadband packages. The website - www.callcosts.ie will be launched on the 6th September.
