Opposition parties and third level institutions have welcomed details of a new strategy for developing science and technology, announced by the Government over the weekend.
The plan involves a substantial increase in funding, doubling the number of phD graduates.
The Government said that €3.8 billion will be spent between now and 2013.
For the first time eight government departments will also co-ordinate all activity in the areas of science, technology and innovation.
