Irish wind energy firm Airtricity plans to build an electricity 'supergrid' connecting wind farms from the Mediterranean to the Bay of Biscay, the Atlantic, the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.
To win political support for the plan the company today briefed MPs in London at the House of Commons.
Early cost estimates for the project come in at €22 billion. The first phase is a 10 gigawatt wind farm project in the North Sea that would connect to the British, German and Dutch national electricity grids.
Airtricity says that when the supergrid is built and operating, Europe will have access to wind energy at all times.
