Boots pleads guilty to WEEE breaches
Tuesday, 24 January 2006Boots Retail (Ireland) has become the first company in Ireland and the EU to be prosecuted for offences under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations.
The company pleaded guilty to charges brought by the Environmental Protection Agency in relation to offences under the WEEE Regulations 2005. The case was heard at Wexford District Court.
The Court imposed a fine of €1,200 on the company, while costs of €6,865 were awarded to the EPA.
The company admitted failing to keep a specified notice in their shops alerting customers to the fact that prices include a contribution to a producer recycling fund to ensure that old electrical and electronic equipment is collected and recycled in a responsible manner.
They also failed to include in a newspaper advertisement the contribution to be made to the fund as well as the net price, as required by the Regulations. The ad was published in the Irish Time as October 27.
