.eu domain now available for Irish businesses

A new European domain name was officially launched today by the Irish company appointed to manage its registrations.

EU Internet will process applications for the .eu domain name from Irish businesses who will be required to submit their application through an accredited registrar.

EU Internet will assist applicants with the registration procedure and is responsible for processing thousands of applications that have already been submitted by individuals and organisations interested in registering their .eu domain names.

The first phase of .eu domain name registrations will begin on December 7th with those with recognised rights to a name and Public bodies being able to register their .eu domain name.

After that .eu domain names will be available on a 'first come, first served basis', and anyone resident in the European Community may register a .eu domain name.

Charlie McCreevy, EU Internal Market Commissioner said he considered the introduction of the .eu domain name to be an important development that will greatly enhance trade links across Europe.

'Once adopted here in Ireland the .eu domain name will offer Irish businesses the opportunity to market themselves to a diverse and lucrative European market'.
