  • Extended description

A civil rights march in Newry begins peacfully protesters marching hand in hand and singing "we shall overcome" but ends in violence. There is a strong media presence at the march.

When the march is halted, Tom Keane of the People's Democracy relays the police message to the marchers, but there is dissent as to what should happen next. Under the Public Order Act Section 2, it has been decided that the march cannot proceed along the planned route.

Stewards struggle to hold back those wishing to storm the police barricade. As the evening goes on, police tenders are attacked and burned.
