Garda jailed for dangerous driving causing death

A Garda who is a member of the Drugs Unit has been jailed for a year for dangerous driving causing the death of a teenage student. Detective Garda Richard Callaghan pleaded guilty to the charge at the Circuit Criminal Court.

The court heard that he was the driver of a car which crashed into the front of the Bleeding Horse Pub in Dublin city centre in the early hours of October 18, 1997. A 19-year-old student, Ruth Goldsberry, who was a passenger the car, died from the injuries she received in the crash. Leave to appeal was refused.
