Ireland start their home international series with the visit of Japan to Aviva Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh from a deflating loss to New Zealand in Chicago, Andy Farrell's side will aim for a morale-boosting victory over the Brave Blossoms.

Japan suffered a heavy defeat to South Africa at Wembley last weekend and Eddie Jones will be looking for a response from his men.

WEATHER

Dublin is set fair for Saturday afternoon, mainly sunny with clear skies in about 14C with possibility of clouds for the second half.

Andy Farrell's side, who lost 23-13 to the All Blacks last weekend, meet Japan for the 11th time, having won nine and lost just one, the infamous World Cup defeat in 2019.

But the current version of the visitors is a pale comparison to that outfit with replacement Michael Leitch the only player involved in Shizuoka who is here this weekend.

They teams have met twice in the meantime, both in Dublin in 2021.

Japan ran an Ireland team without their British and Irish Lions close, 39-31, that summer, but were crushed 60-5 in the November game with Johnny Sexton scoring a try on his 100th cap.

In team news, Ireland have made eight changes to last week’s team.

Captain Caelan Doris, Rónan Kelleher, Thomas Clarkson and Nick Timoney come into the pack, while Craig Casey, Robbie Henshaw and Jacob Stockdale join debutant Tom Farrell (below) in the backline.

The visitors, ranked 13th in the world, have won just one of their 15 games against Six Nations opposition since beating Ireland and Scotland at that Rugby World Cup, that being a 24-19 victory against Wales in July this year.

If Ireland were poor against New Zealand last weekend, and they were, Japan were no great shakes against the Springboks either.

In fact the Brave Blossoms conceded a first try in the third minute and leaked another eight before the World Cup champions had finished – they simply had no answer to the power and pace of South Africa.

World rankings post NZ

Jones has made three changes to the starting XV following last weekend’s 61-7 loss.

Scrum-half Naoto Saito, lock Epineri Uluiviti and number 8 Faulua Makisi come into the team, with Shinobu Fujiwara, Jack Cornelsen and Leitch dropping to the bench.

WHAT THEY SAID:

Andy Farrell (Ireland head coach): "Saturday presents us with an opportunity to play in front of a packed Aviva Stadium. Playing at home is a privilege that we never take lightly and it's the start of an exciting three weeks of games as we look to build momentum."

Eddie Jones (Japan head coach): "With the change in the laws surrounding escorting, contestable kicks have gone through the roof and it is one of the winning metrics of the game now. The one question there, is that the game we want? Well, that's the game World Rugby has given us and you have got to be good enough to play that game."
