MIND GAMES - RUGBY WORLD CUP WARM-UPS FRAUGHT WITH DANGERS

Joe Schmidt has named a side filled with probable World Cup starters albeit with Johnny Sexton and Keith Earls rested after missing some training during the week.

The main talking point is the decision to name Ross Byrne at out-half, the Leinster man starting his first international after two appearances off the bench.

Victory for Ireland would see them move to number one in the world rankings

He'll share game time with Jack Carty as both men make their case as back-ups to Sexton and possibly Joey Carbery, should the Munster man recover in time for the World Cup squad, which will be named at the start of September.

"It's an intimidating place to play rugby," said captain Rory Best of Twickenham, "but it’s is a great place to show your value to the team and that’s Ross’ opportunity."

Otherwise the selection of lock Jean Kleyn, for the second game in a row following his debut in the win over Italy two weeks ago, suggests that the South African is in a strong position to firm up a place on the plane to Japan.

England, who have played Wales twice in the last fortnight, winning at home and losing in Cardiff, have named a formidable line-up with George Ford and Owen Farrell pairing up from the start for the first time in 14 months.

Harlequins prop Joe Marler makes his first Test start since coming out of retirement.

COACH'S VIEW

Joe Schmidt: "England are probably a little bit ahead of us in terms of their preparation but... you want to make sure that you periodise it right so that we are on an upswing by the time we get to that 22 September game (v Scotland).

"So a 24 August game comes a distant second. If we're carrying a little bit of fatigue in the legs, I'll accept that."

Eddie Jones: "It's about finding out what sort of tactical approaches we can employ and use in Japan, because we're going to need a few. We want to see a passing game. We played a quite tight game against Wales. Last week there were zero line breaks.

"So we feel like this game we probably need to pass a bit more, and with George at 10 and Owen at 12 we think we can do that.

"We'd like to win against Ireland but we're preparing for the World Cup, so it just gives us another selection strategy going forward."

Nigel Owens will take charge of the 135th meeting between the teams with England currently leading 77-49 with eight draws.

UPDATE: England were forced to make a change this morning, with centre Joe Marchant replacing Jonathan Joseph on the bench.

An RFU statement said: "Head coach Eddie Jones has decided not to risk Joseph, who has muscle soreness this morning."

Marchant made his England debut as a replacement in the 33-19 win against Wales at Twickenham earlier this month.
