Donegal's Ulster final day took a tragic turn when captain Michael Murphy learned that his close friend Manus Kelly was killed whilst competing in the Donegal International Rally on Sunday.

Kelly died while taking part in the race he had won three times and he was also a friend of the Donegal captain.

Murphy lifted the Anglo Celt Cup after his side's 1-24 to 2-16 win over Cavan in Clones and he only learned of the tragedy when he went into the dressing-rooms and was given the bad news.

Kelly was a well-known figure in Donegal and was a local Fianna Fáil councillor.

It has been a year of tragedy on the roads for Donegal GAA, with Mícheál Roarty, John Hanley, Daniel Scott and Shaun Harkin killed in a traffic accident at the start of 2019.

Roarty played for Gaoth Dobhair, who featured in February’s All-Ireland club semi-final.
