A 23-year-old Polish social media influencer has raised more than 251m Polish zloty (€59m) for children's cancer treatment costs during a nine-day non-stop livestream on YouTube and Tiktok.
The influencer, who goes by the name of Łatwogang, began the livestream from his flat in Warsaw on 17 April with the intention of raising 500,000 Polish zloty (approximately €117,000) for the Cancer Fighters Foundation.
The Polish charity funds treatment costs for cancer patients and purchases specialised medical equipment.
Interest in Łatwogang's online endeavour quickly spread throughout Poland and the livestream had clocked up an audience of 1.4 million viewers at its peak according to PAP, the Polish news agency.
The feat surpasses the previous Guinness World Record of €16.6m for the most amount of money raised by a livestream fundraiser, set last September by a French charity project.
During the marathon live stream, Łatwogang, whose real name is Piotr Garkowski according to Polish media outlets, played a charity rap song on loop while Polish actors and musicians made appearances alongside the influencer in the cramped recording space.
The song, entitled "I'm Still Here" and recorded by Polish rapper Bedoes 2115, was performed by an 11-year-old girl name Maja who is battling leukaemia and describes her experience of living with cancer.
Well-known Polish sportspeople such as current Wimbledon tennis champion Iga Świątek, Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny made appearances via video call, as did their Barcelona teammate and Spanish footballer Lamine Yamal.
Coldplay's Chris Martin joined the livestream at one stage and sang a few words in Polish, before humorously apologising for his Polish-language skills.
Łatwogang and others who appeared during the livestream shaved their heads in a show of support for cancer patients, further increasing donations from viewers and Polish companies.
After ending the livestream on Sunday night, Łatwogang told Polish public radio station 'Jedynka' that he "did not feel important" after the nine-day livestream.
"The only heroes are the little warriors. I think that we should talk about them as the only people who have done something great," said the influencer.
