Former Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail and will remain under house arrest until he is sentenced for his girlfriend's murder, a conviction he intends to appeal.

Pistorius will be electronically tagged and must keep within a 20km radius of the house and surrender his passport. He can leave the house between 7am and midday every day. His bail was set at 10,000 rand (€630).

The 29-year-old is set to be sentenced on 18 April next year for killing Reeva Steenkamp, however his lawyer told a bail hearing this morning that Pistorius will be appealing the conviction.

"[Pistorius' bail] affidavit deals ... with the basis for the application for leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court," Barry Roux told the High Court in Pretoria.

The Supreme Court last Thursday upgraded the athlete's sentence to murder from "culpable homicide", South Africa's equivalent of manslaughter, for which he had received a five-year sentence.

Pistorius was to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest at his uncle's house in a wealthy suburb of the capital Pretoria after being released from jail on 19 October.

Pistorius, known as 'Blade Runner' because of the carbon-fibre prosthetic blades he used to race, now faces a minimum 15-year jail term.

He killed Ms Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013 after firing four shots through a locked toilet door.

He said he mistook her for a burglar, while prosecutors argued that he had intended to kill her.
