Former US vice president Joe Biden has described as "disgraceful" the current treatment of immigrants in the US.

He was speaking at the launch of the Cambridge History of Ireland at the Irish Ambassador's residence in Washington last night, during which he praised the contribution of Irish immigrants.

Amid speculation that Mr Biden might consider a run for the White House, he said last night that America needs to get its confidence back and that whoever runs in 2020, he is going to help.

Mr Biden has ramped up his criticisms of the Trump administration in recent weeks and last night was no different.

He described the current treatment of immigrants in the US as a disgrace and said the WB Yeats quote "a terrible beauty is born" could be applied to modern-day America.
