A murder investigation is under way after a woman was stabbed to death in Co Antrim.

Detectives have named her as 64-year-old Alyson Nelson.

Ms Nelson, a former health worker, was attacked in her home in the seaside village of Whitehead at around 6pm yesterday evening.

Police officers and paramedics responded to a report of suspicious activity, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man has been arrested and is being questioned by police.

PSNI Detective Inspector Foreman said: "We received a report at around 6.10pm that a woman had been stabbed at a property in the Victoria Avenue area of Whitehead.

"Officers attended, along with colleagues from Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

"Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A man in his 60s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody."

The PSNI said it was appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
