An investigation is under way after two telecommunication masts were set on fire in Co Donegal last night.

The incidents happened at Circular Road and Long Lane in Letterkenny at around 8.50pm.

Both fires were put out by fire services personnel and no injuries were reported.

Gardaí have said they are treating the incidents as suspected criminal damage.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

The Commission for Communications Regulation has said vandalising mobile phone mast infrastructure will stop masts from carrying mobile call and data services at a time when people are relying on these services.

ComReg also said "there is absolutely no truth in the rumours of a link between Covid-19 and 5G."

Rumours relating to the virus had led to arson attacks against telecommunications towers in the UK recently.

In a statement, ComReg added that the Department of Health has advised that Covid-19 is spread in sneeze or cough droplets and there is no evidence of a link to 5G.

The body called on people to "ignore misinformation circulating on social media and not to spread it further."
