Former MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon has settled her legal action against the Sunday World.

Before Mr Justice Maguire in Belfast's High Court a barrister representing the Sunday World read out an apology and confirmed the former Eurovision Song Contest winner would be paid six figure damages plus costs.

Speaking outside the court, Ms Scallon said a story published by the Sunday World in July 2014 was a direct and brutal attack on all she believes and values and on her good name, her integrity, her character and her public and private life.

She said among other things the article explicitly and falsely stated that she engaged in a cover up of child abuse.

When asked if the controversy was the reason for her absence from the public arena in recent years, Mrs Scallon broke down.

Her husband, Damien Scallon, and her brother, John Brown, were with her today.

It is understood that further legal proceedings linked to this controversy are in train south of the border.
