Belfast is to host an annual technology conference, linked to the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for the next three years.

The first event will take place virtually on 27 and 28 May due to Covid-19 related travel restrictions.

But it is hoped that international delegates will be able to travel to Northern Ireland for the 2022 and 2023 events.

EmTech Europe is expected to attract major speakers and delegates from the technology sector.

The event is linked to the MIT Technology Review, a magazine wholly owned by MIT and editorially independent of the university.

It is a significant coup for Belfast to be selected as host city for the event as Northern Ireland seeks to chart a path in post-Brexit times, when it has access to both EU and UK markets.

In recent years, Northern Ireland has attracted significant foreign direct investment in technology sectors, including cyber security.
