There are calls for the State to fund repair works at a historic park in Co Donegal that was destroyed by flash flooding.

Swan Park in Buncrana was one of the many areas that were extensively damaged during the flooding in August 2017.

Unprecedented damage was caused across the Inishowen area with roads and bridges destroyed and sports and other facilities left unusable.

Despite a large amount of repair work being done, there is anger that Swan Park remains closed.

Thousands of people have called on the Government to restore the popular beauty spot.

The park, which runs along the River Crana, was destroyed by a five-metre high surge of water that toppled walls, uprooted trees and wrecked a bridge.

Donegal County Council has put the cost of the repair work at €2.25 million.

The council has been trying to source funding but without success to date.

Local people, including Buncrana Tidy Towns, now say it is time the State stepped in to fund the work so that the park can be reopened for the many visitors and locals who use it.

A petition, signed by up to 5,000 people, has been submitted by Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray, who says there is a strong view locally that had the park been somewhere else, such as The Ring of Kerry or Westport, it would have been restored long ago.
