Sinn Féin's leader in Northern Ireland, Michelle O'Neill, is on course to become the party's new vice president without a contest.

Nominations for the vacancy close tomorrow and so far she is the only candidate.

The deputy leader position became available when it was vacated recently by Mary Lou McDonald.

Ms McDonald was the only candidate nominated to succeed Gerry Adams as the party's president on January 20.

She will formally take over that role at a special Sinn Féin Ard Fheis on February 10.

Nominations for the deputy position opened last Monday when Ms O’Neill made it known she would be a candidate for the position.

The deadline for nominations is tomorrow evening.
