Projects focused on artificial intelligence (AI) and health are among the most popular entries for the 2026 Stripe Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (YSTE).

Almost 2,000 entries were received for the contest which takes place from 7 to 10 January.

Many of the projects explore factors shaping young people's lives such as social media, vaping and Leaving Cert stress.

The number of entries related to AI and machine learning grew 75%, while sustainability and climate change entries increased by 41%.

"The level of intellect and curiosity displayed in this year's Stripe YSTE project entries has amazed us," said Dr Tony Scott, co-founder of YSTE.

"Narrowing down the 1,974 entries to just 550 qualified projects was no small task, and we look forward to hearing more from the students about their projects at the exhibition in January," Dr Scott said.

In May, financial technology company Stripe was announced as the new title sponsor of the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, taking over from BT.

"It's brilliant to see students using science as a way to understand themselves, their communities and the world around them," said Eileen O'Mara, Chief Revenue Officer at Stripe.

"What’s exciting about this year's entries is the balance between deep scientific inquiry and social awareness," Ms O'Mara said.
