Irish Instagram users will be able to avail of a new 'quiet mode' option from today.

The setting will let followers and friends know when users are unavailable for a certain period of time.

When someone enables quiet mode, they will see an "in quiet mode" status on their profile, notifications will be muted and an auto-reply will be sent in response to DMs from friends and followers.

"Today, we're launching 'quiet mode’ to help people focus and to encourage people to set boundaries with friends and followers," Instagram said in a blogpost.

"Anyone can use ‘quiet mode’, but we’ll prompt teens to do so when they spend a specific amount of time on Instagram late at night," the company said.

The social media platform said it is also updating its parental controls.

Parents will now be able to view their teenager’s Instagram account settings, including privacy and content defaults and controls.

They will also receive a notification if their teenager updates a setting or blocks an account.
