The father of two children who fell from a second-storey balcony of an apartment in Co Waterford has said he is "thankful my kids are alive".

The incident occurred in Block C of Mount Suir Manor in Waterford city yesterday.

A three-year-old boy fell more than 6m after the glass pane at the side of the balcony fell off.

Ryan O'Neill said his son Jayden "ran head first straight through the glass" and "the glass just fell out".

He said his seven-year-old daughter Nevaeh then fell after she "tried to save" her brother.

Both children were taken to University Hospital Waterford.

Nevaeh was discharged yesterday afternoon but her brother was kept in for monitoring due to the nature of his head injuries.

Mr O'Neill said Jayden sustained a "bleed on the brain".

"I'm an emotional wreck now, I can't sleep or anything," he said.

Mr O'Neill said the family have "been onto the council numerous times".

However, he added the council "don't even bother replying to the emails".
