Work on a new bridge linking Co Down and Co Louth is expected to begin within weeks.
The construction contract for the Narrow Water Bridge has now been awarded.
Stormont First Minister Michelle O'Neill welcomed the announcement.
"This will be transformative for south Down and the Cooley areas, creating a wealth of opportunities and unlocking the huge potential to create good quality jobs, boost tourism and create a stronger, all-Ireland economy," she said.
The project will see a 280m cable-stayed bridge anchored by two towers linking the A2 Newry to Warrenpoint dual carriageway with the R173 in Omeath.
It will have segregated car, cycle and pedestrian lanes and will open to accommodate boats passing through to the Newry canal.
The project has received financial backing from the Government’s Shared Island Fund.
The bridge is expected to cost in the region of €60m and will take several years to complete.
