St Stephen's Green bandstand reopens after two-year closure

The reopening of one of Ireland's finest historic bandstands has taken place in Dublin's St Stephen's Green.

The stand has been closed to the public for two years after structural and drainage issues made it unsafe for visitors.

The bandstand was built in 1887 and is a protected structure

Restoration works on the pillars of the structure, which dates back 130 years, cost almost €400,000.

The bandstand was reopened with a performance by the Newbridge Gospel Choir.

It was cordoned off in September 2021 due to damage apparently caused by crowds who used it for outdoor socialising during the pandemic.

The bandstand, which was built in 1887, is a protected structure and was never designed to hold crowds of people.

In a statement, the Office of Public Works (OPW) said that the structure is not capable of taking the "imposed and dynamic loading".
